Rising Through the Fray ~ Presented by Rage City Roller Derby
- Mon, Sep 7
Director: Courtney Montour Run Time: 88 min. Rating: Not rated Release Year: 2025
Combining interviews and live cinema, Rising Through the Fray takes us into the heart of Indigenous Rising Roller Derby, the first international team to bring together Indigenous players from several countries. For Sour Cherry, Krispy, Hawaiian Blaze, and their teammates, the sport becomes much more than a competition. Through it, they find a space for sisterhood, resilience, acceptance, and healing. On camera, they share intimate stories not only of being uprooted and the wounds of intergenerational trauma, but also of reconnecting with their culture and of the relief of finding a community. In this powerful, feminist documentary, these women assert their right to exist on their own terms.

From our partner: “Team Indigenous Rising brought together members from over 30 Indigenous nations to claim space in roller derby that has long struggled with diversity. The team includes athletes representing Alaska Indigenous people and Anchorage’s own, Niketah (#47) of Rage City Roller Derby, and highlights Indigenous Rising’s stories of competition, intergenerational trauma, and community. As a film about the sport, identity, resilience, and belonging, we are proud to help bring this film to Anchorage and share the story of this monumental team’s journey to the Roller Derby World Cup.”
Part of the proceeds will benefit Rage City Roller Derby, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
